The establishment, by the United States government, of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands was in March 1865. Its first commissioner was Union General Oliver O. Howard, who later founded Howard University in Washington, D.C. This agency soon became known as the Freedmen' s Bureau. This organization also tried to form a relationship between the two races. This indeed was very hard to do, for the former slaves feared that the old masters would en-slave them again.
Purposes:
The Freedmen's Bureau was made to help former slaves and poor whites cope with everyday challenges. It soon became focused on helping freedmen adjust to their new circumstances. The purpose shifted to education:

The American Baptist Home Mission society organized Morehouse College om Augusta. This college moved to Atlanta in 1870 and is still in process today. Morehouse Graduates
Atlanta University:
In 1867, the American Missionary Association sponsored the chartering of Georgia's Atlanta University. Clark College:
The Clark College was the third Georgia Reconstruction-era school. This college was built in Atlanta and was first opened as a school for children, but by 1877, it had become a college. |
